Not too long ago Nikon announced the D610 and as usual I copy/pasted a press release along with the caption they provided:
“CONCENTRATE ON THE CLARITY: THE NEW NIKON D610 FX-FORMAT D-SLR PLACES EMPHASIS ON THE IMAGE MAKING EXPERIENCE”
Of course I got a chuckle out of this…Last I checked, the camera is a fairly big part of the image making experience. Be it film or digital, that’s the camera’s underlying purpose no matter how you dress it. Alas, Nikon believes photographers have forgotten what it feels like to pick up your first camera and perhaps they’re trying to tap into that long-buried nostalgia of simpler times without touch screens, 4k video and WiFi…
Many presume Nikon is about to unleash a new retro-inspired full frame camera, hearkening back to FM2 days with the exception of a beastly sensor inside. While many of the technical details are being speculated by internet rumor wizards. Generally we stay away from unfounded guesses, but this seems like it’s definitely going to happen considering the subtle campaign Nikon has embarked on, starting with this curiously tantalizing video dubbed “Pure Photography #1″ which depicts a man, his cleverly edited out camera and a beautiful landscape.
To be honest I haven’t seen this much effort put into teasing a camera in a while, it’s refreshing actually! Who knows, maybe this will be the camera that purists are asking for…a no frills camera with impressive image quality that brings about a tiny gleam in the eye of a photographer who was once enthusiastic and optimistic of their trade…or maybe it’ll be another interchangeable lens camera that most people shrug at. I guess we’ll see. One thing’s for sure: That shutter sound at the end of the video is pretty damn satisfying.
